Learn to develop the concepts of hair and fur

In this course, students will learn how to develop fur and hair for VFX with Yeti. Starting from a basic grooming concept and learning the main tools; the course will go through hair creation of CG Doubles and later going deep in fur development for realistic creatures. Included in this course is also an introduction to grooming feathers. At the end of this course the student will have an in-depth knowledge of grooming, ready to develop his/her own groom portfolio and be able to join a production project as a groom artist.

Assignment:   Due each week. Expect to spend 10-20 hrs/wk viewing lectures, q&a, and assignment.
Q&A:   Once a week
Materials:   Maya, Yeti, any 3D painting software (suggested Mari or Substance)
Skills level:   Intermediate to Advanced
Prerequisites:   Basic knowledge of Maya, Modelling knowledge is a plus | Course Pre-Req's include Intro to Production Modeling, Sculpting Anatomy: From Animal to Creature, Texturing for Film/Cinematics, Intro to Substance

Lectures by Francesco & Sofia

Francesco Di Luisi and Sofia Oliveira are Character and Creature Artists specialised in Grooming. Francesco worked in MPC and Framestore, in titles such as Jungle Book, Mowgli and King Arthur, where he was responsible for the fur and hair creation of many creatures and CG doubles. Sofia worked several years as freelance groom artist in different animation projects. Together, they created Antepost, a freelance creative duo service which includes Grooming and Character Development for VFX, consulting and teaching.
