Conquer the digital art medium

This course is an introduction to digital painting and color composition for film and animation. With an emphasis on studying the works of old masters, students will discover the process of how to deconstruct the picture plane through film studies, reproductions of master works, and the widely used- but often understated -industry standard technique of 'Photobashing'. Course work will cover color theory, perspective, and the use of brushes & textures in Photoshop (this includes: creating images of characters, props, or vehicles using photo overlays in Photoshop). *Lectures are recorded by David Meritt, and the class is taught by Teodor Hueala.

Film composition for drama and story, understanding cinematic lighting and composition.
Interpretations of photographic reference of a variation of textures to develop an understanding of what elements make up specific textures as well as to continue to develop an understanding of Photoshop brushes.
Use of values to create order and structure in a painting. Limited black and white thumbnail values studies referencing master paintings, film compositions and from imagination.
Study from the traditional masters and analyze their work through master copies.
Color and Lighting for drama and story (cinematic and old masters)
Techniques to finish and refine a painting with examples shown.
Color and light during different times of day and how it affects surfaces and creates different moods. Techniques for creating these lighting effects.
Final Project Use previous weeks project and use Photobashing to incorporate photo and new elements for a final image.

Lectures by David Merritt

Hueala Teodor was born and raised in Romania, where he studied graphics at the Fine Arts University. His career started in the mobile game industry in 2012, doing freelance until 2013 when he got his first in-house job at a mobile game company. During this time period he worked on various projects including board games, comics, and doing gallery presentation shows. In 2016 he switched from mobile games to the AAA game industry by joining Ubisoft. In 2017 Teodor went back to freelance and he has artwork published in 2D Artist Magazine and Faith Series from Burning Games.
