Create powerful modeling workflows

This course will be an in-depth look into procedural modeling in Houdini; throughout the course, students will gain a strong understanding of how proceduralism can be used to create powerful modeling workflows. We will explore a variety of concepts used to create procedural assets, with each lesson having a finished product demonstrating the principles of that week. We will learn how to organize your workflows and create artist-friendly interfaces for reuseability. Together, we'll create several finished model assets with fully procedural controls.

An overview of how we can use point attributes to give extra levels of control & complexity through proceduralism | Explore the basic attributes used to control copies (N, up, pscale, scale)
Explore the tools we can use to get a hard-surface mechanical look | Explore methods of add slight imperfections to our setup to add believability | See how, with the proper procedural setup, a "rig" comes for free, and we can control and pose the bird via the controls we created
Introduction to procedural modeling as a concept. Discuss its growing presence in the industry, and look at examples from film, TV and games. Discuss how it fits into the pipeline of a typical studio. Discuss its benefits over traditional modeling, and look at the different types of objects that would benefit from a procedural approach, with examples.
Build generators for a few different coral reef types: Tubular, Digitate, Laminar Sheets, Branching
Discuss using the power of proceduralism to create complex looking geometry through simple repetition| Look at examples | Create base of Pagoda: Use our procedural stair setup from lesson 1 to create stairs that match the height of the base, build repeatable stories and construct the roof
Pagoda Details: Look at how we can break down a complex looking asset into multiple simple procedural pieces | Explore how adding many simple layers of procedural can give complex looking, believable results | Continue working on our pagoda, adding extra detail to it
Instructor

Igniting your imagination

Sean is a VES Nominated Procedural Environments Artist currently working at Blue Sky Studios. He has worked on over 25 movies and television shows, with some of his more recent credits including Shazam!, Ad Astra, and Spies and Disguise. His experience ranges from animation studios to vfx houses, and he has worked as both an FX Artist and Environment Artist, both with a focus on Houdini. He studied Visual Effects at Savannah College of Art and Design.
